Cathedral Basilica of the Good Lord Jesus, Cuiabá, Modern Catholic cathedral in Cuiabá, Brazil
The Cathedral Basilica of the Good Lord Jesus is a modern reinforced concrete building with two distinctive bell towers and a large main nave. The structure holds about 800 people and features an underground section connected to the main worship space.
The original church dated from 1723 but was demolished in 1968 due to deterioration. The current building was completed by 1973 and represents the move toward modern structures that could serve the growing religious needs of the city.
The name comes from the local devotion to Jesus that has been practiced in the region since the 1700s. Visitors today see religious artworks from earlier times that shape prayer life here and show how faith is lived in this community.
The building sits at Praça da República in the downtown area and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can explore both the main worship space and the underground section, with the interior open to guests year-round.
The crypt holds the remains of Pascoal Moreira Cabral Leme, the person who discovered the gold deposits that led to Cuiabá's founding. This connection shows how the city's religious center ties to its early economic history.
