Conjunto Nacional, Shopping mall in Brasília, Brazil
Conjunto Nacional is a shopping mall on the northern side of Brasília's Eixo Monumental, close to the city's main bus terminal. The complex combines a ground-level retail floor with two office towers and an open-air upper terrace known as the Jardim Urbano.
Conjunto Nacional opened in the early 1970s as the first shopping center in Brazil's Center-West region and only the second in the whole country. The building was designed by Lúcio Costa, with a facade created by the artist Athos Bulcão.
The Conjunto Nacional sits along one of Brasília's main axes, and locals have long treated it as a natural meeting point in the city center. Walking through its corridors, you notice a mix of local and national brands that reflects how residents shop day to day in the capital.
The mall is open most days from late morning through the evening, with shorter hours on Sundays. Weekdays tend to be less crowded, so they are a better choice if you prefer to move around without much traffic.
The building's facade was recognized by UNESCO as part of the city's World Heritage designation, which is rare for an active commercial space. Inside, a bike rack dedicated to local urban planner Pedro Davison is easy to miss but connects the place to the story of how Brasília was built.
