Edifício Oceania, Art Deco residential building in Barra, Salvador, Brazil.
Edifício Oceania is a 12-story residential building with 48 apartments positioned to overlook Barra Lighthouse and the Bay of All Saints. Each unit contains three or four bedrooms and was designed to serve upper-class residents in the area.
Construction began in 1930 but was delayed by material shortages during World War II, with completion in 1943. This extended building period reflected the economic difficulties that affected the region during those years.
The building combines Art Deco, modernist, and cubist design elements in ways that reflected innovative thinking among local architects. These mixed styles show how the designers experimented with different approaches during the era when it was built.
The building features five elevators providing access to the residential units throughout the structure. Building maintenance costs are offset by income from telecommunications antenna rentals on the roof.
The structure exceeded height regulations during construction, which prompted the adoption of lower building standards for the entire Oceanic Avenue. This consequence made it a turning point for how the neighborhood developed afterward.
