Serra da Barriga rises from 150 to 560 meters in elevation, forming part of the Southern Borborema Plateau with its hot and humid climate.
The mountain served as the location of Cerca do Macaco settlement until 1694, when Portuguese forces led by Domingos Jorge Velho conducted their final attack.
The National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage listed Serra da Barriga in 1986 for its connection to the Palmares community and African Brazilian history.
Visitors can access the site through União dos Palmares municipality, where local guides provide tours of the historical trails and archaeological areas.
The Açucena creek originates from Serra da Barriga and flows through the Mundaú valley for 8.6 kilometers, supporting the local ecosystem.
