Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, Gothic church in São Luís, Brazil
Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a church building with a white facade and Gothic design in São Luís. Its central bell tower, three entrance doors, and twelve side windows with pointed arches define its exterior form.
The building started in 1719 as a chapel and was then rebuilt between 1903 and 1911. Local merchants and workers supported this major reconstruction with their resources.
The stained glass windows inside come from Germany and show religious scenes that catch visitors' eyes immediately. These artworks shape how light and space feel when you walk through the building.
The building sits at Gonçalves Dias Square overlooking the waterfront and is easy to reach on foot. It serves as a popular location for weddings and is regularly open for visitors and the faithful.
The building is the only example of Gothic architecture in São Luís and displays four evangelist statues on its side walls. These sculptures are an unusual feature for religious architecture in this region of Brazil.
