Richmond, place in Northern Cape, South Africa
Richmond is a small town in the Northern Cape Province located near the N1 highway, roughly halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The center offers museums, bookshops, galleries, guesthouses, and restaurants that make it possible to spend at least two days here.
At the start of the 20th century, the region saw small conflicts during the Boer War between British and Afrikaner forces. The Horse Museum was established in 1963 in a former orphanage building and documents the historical role of horses in the area.
Richmond earned recognition as South Africa's first Book Town, drawing readers interested in old and rare books. The annual Bookbedonnerd Festival brings writers and poets together to share stories and poetry with the community.
The town is easily navigable with museums, shops, and services for visitors along Loop Street. Hotels, cafe rooms, and farmstays provide accommodation options while an information center offers help with planning.
The Horse Museum has a reputation for being haunted by a ghost said to appear in the building. The adjacent museum keeps unusual objects including a large whale vertebra marked with harpoon damage from past whaling days.
