University of KwaZulu-Natal, Public research university in Durban, South Africa.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal is a public research institution in Durban that operates five campuses specializing in fields such as agriculture, engineering, health sciences, humanities, law, and management. The buildings range from older brick structures to newer facilities with modern lecture halls and laboratories.
The institution was established in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville to strengthen educational resources after the end of apartheid. The union brought together facilities that had previously been divided along racial lines.
The name honors the province of KwaZulu-Natal and reflects the merger of different institutions that once served separate communities. Today learners from across the country and abroad study at the various sites spread throughout the city.
The libraries across all campuses offer extensive digital resources and research materials along with specialized study spaces for students and visitors. Some areas are open to the public while others require identification or registration.
The Nelson Mandela School of Medicine was founded in 1950 as the first medical faculty for non-white students during apartheid and now forms part of the institution. It was among the few places where medical training became accessible to all population groups.
