Kusile Power Station, Coal-fired power station in Victor Khanye Local Municipality, South Africa.
Kusile Power Station is a coal-fired generating facility in Victor Khanye Local Municipality, located in Mpumalanga Province. The station has six production units, each capable of generating 800 megawatts of electricity.
Construction began in August 2008 with an original completion target that was later extended multiple times. By 2023, five of the six units had entered operation after a prolonged development process.
The power station operates within the Mpumalanga Province, where isiNdebele speakers form the majority of the local population, followed by isiZulu and Afrikaans communities.
The facility uses flue gas desulphurization technology and cooling systems designed to minimize environmental impact while conserving local water supplies. The equipment is tailored to the operating conditions typical of this region.
During construction, hundreds of local suppliers and contractors from the Victor Khanye area received project contracts, significantly supporting the regional economy. This investment in local businesses formed a substantial portion of the overall project spending.
