Gaza Empire, Historical African empire in southeastern Mozambique
The Gaza Empire stretched from the Zambezi to the Limpopo River, covering territories in present-day Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The capital city of Manjacaze served as the administrative hub where Emperor Gungunyana managed the realm until Portuguese colonization took hold.
General Soshangane founded the Gaza Empire in 1824 during waves of migration sparked by drought and shifting regional power. The realm held together for about 70 years before falling to Portuguese pressure in 1895.
The realm brought together different indigenous groups under a single administration that combined local traditions and social structures. This mixing shaped how neighboring territories saw the region and its people.
Visitors explore the ruins and historical sites scattered across southern Mozambique. Access is easiest from the Gaza region, where travelers can reach different locations connected to the former realm.
The realm controlled key trade routes linking inland resources to coastal markets while holding back European colonial pressure. Gungunyana's fierce resistance to colonization made him a celebrated figure in local memory and storytelling.
