Gonarezhou National Park, National park in Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe.
Gonarezhou is a national park in Masvingo Province featuring savannas, woodlands, and riverine forests along the Runde River. The Chilojo Cliffs form a striking rock formation that rises above the river valley below.
The area became a Game Reserve in 1936 and was upgraded to national park status in 1975. It reopened to the public in 1994 following a period of regional conflict.
The name comes from the Shona language meaning "Place of Elephants," reflecting how local communities have long viewed wildlife in this region.
The park can be reached by gravel road from Chiredzi or by chartered flight to Chipinda Pools airstrip. Visitors should expect unpaved roads and basic facilities throughout their stay.
The confluence of the Save and Runde rivers marks Zimbabwe's lowest point at about 162 meters elevation. This location is home to unusual fish species including Zambezi sharks and sawfish that are rare to find in inland waters.
