Zimbabwe, Country in southern Africa
Zimbabwe is a republic in southern Africa between the Zambezi in the north and the Limpopo in the south, while the Eastern Highlands form a mountainous eastern border. The central plateau sits at roughly 1200 to 1600 meters in elevation and shapes the temperate climate of the region.
Ruins from the 11th to 15th centuries served as the trading center of a major African kingdom and gave the modern nation its name. British colonial rule ended in 1980 when the country gained independence and named itself after the historical stone structures.
Shona communities preserve their culture through stone sculpture, drum-based ceremonies and oral narratives passed down across generations. These practices remain visible in daily life and shape festivals as well as local markets throughout the country.
The US dollar functions as the main currency for transactions, while South African rand and Botswana pula are accepted at many establishments. Visitors should carry smaller bills as change can be scarce and mobile payment methods are increasingly common.
The Chinhoyi Caves hold an underground network with tunnels and pools, including the Wonder Hole where water maintains a year-round constant temperature. The depth of the main pool reaches roughly 90 meters and attracts divers from around the world.
