Manicaland, Eastern province in Zimbabwe
Manicaland is an eastern province of Zimbabwe with diverse landscapes of mountains, valleys, and plateaus along the Mozambique border. The region spans approximately 36,500 square kilometers and includes seven rural districts as well as three urban areas.
The province was founded in the early colonial period as one of the original five provinces of Southern Rhodesia. Agriculture and mining activities shaped the region's development over generations.
The region takes its name from the Manyika people, who live here and speak ChiManyika. Alongside this group, the Ndau and MaUngwe communities also shape daily life and local traditions.
Mutare serves as the capital and main transportation center for the region. Visitors should be aware that rural areas have less developed infrastructure and exploration requires careful planning.
The region is home to the nation's three highest peaks and is known for extensive diamond mining operations in the Marange and Chiadzwa areas. These mining activities shape the economic life of several communities in this part of Zimbabwe today.
