Lake Chivero, lake in Zimbabwe
Lake Chivero is a man-made reservoir west of Harare, formed by damming the Manyame River. It sits within a recreational park and offers areas for fishing, boating, and walking along its shores.
The reservoir was built in the early 1950s when a dam was constructed across the Manyame River to supply water to Harare. Over time, it also became important for farming in the surrounding region.
The name comes from the Shona language and points to water as a life-giving force. Along the shores, visitors can see locals fishing, sharing meals outdoors, and spending their weekends by the water.
The lake is easy to reach by car from Harare along well-marked roads. Going in the morning is a good idea, as the area tends to be quieter and the light over the water is at its best.
The park surrounding the lake is home to rhinoceroses and zebras, which can sometimes be spotted from the shoreline. This makes a visit here feel different from a typical trip to a reservoir.
