Kabwe, Industrial city in Central Province, Zambia
Kabwe is an industrial city in Central Province, Zambia, situated at an elevation of 1,172 meters (3,845 feet). The city serves as the provincial capital and functions as a major transportation hub for the region.
The city was founded in 1902 as Broken Hill and grew around deposits of lead and zinc. It became a major mining center until larger copper operations began in the 1930s in other parts of the country.
The city has several markets where vendors sell traditional crafts, local produce, and regional specialties from different Zambian ethnic communities. Walking through these markets, you encounter the daily commerce and diverse customs of local groups living here.
The central location on the T2 road and Zambia Railways line provides easy connections to major destinations throughout the country. These transport routes make it straightforward to travel to other regions from this point.
The fossil of Broken Hill Man, discovered in 1921 at a local mine, represents important early human remains. This archaeological find reveals how long humans have lived in this region.
