Gishwati Forest, Protected rainforest in Western Province, Rwanda
Gishwati Forest contains 58 species of trees and shrubs, providing a habitat for eastern chimpanzees, red river hogs, and multiple primate species in northwestern Rwanda.
The forest decreased from 250,000 acres to 1,500 acres by 2005 due to population displacement and agricultural expansion following the events of 1994 in Rwanda.
The Forest of Hope Guest House opened in 2020 to support local communities through nature-based tourism activities including guided forest walks and wildlife observation.
Visitors can access the forest through organized tours that include chimpanzee tracking, with the dry seasons from June to September offering the most favorable conditions.
The forest forms part of Gishwati-Mukura National Park, which received UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2020 for its environmental restoration achievements.
