Hôtel des Mille Collines, Grand hotel in central business district, Kigali, Rwanda.
The Hôtel des Mille Collines is a 112-room property in Kigali's business district, ranging from standard accommodations to spacious suites overlooking the city. The complex spans several floors and includes dining spaces, conference halls, an outdoor pool, and tennis courts set in landscaped grounds.
The property opened its doors in the 1970s as part of the expansion of upscale accommodations in the Rwandan capital. In April 1994, it became a shelter for more than 1,200 people during the violence across the country.
The property takes its name from the thousand hills that shape the Rwandan landscape, a feature still visible across the capital. Visitors today experience a blend of continental hospitality and African touches in the design of spaces and the choice of dishes served.
Visitors can use the outdoor facilities, with the pool and tennis courts most enjoyable in good weather. The property offers transfer service to the airport for registered overnight guests.
The story of this property was adapted into an international film released in 2004, although filming took place in South Africa. Visitors today recognize the building by its raised entrance area and the facade facing the main road.
