Bugesera International Airport, Airport construction site in Bugesera District, Rwanda
Bugesera International Airport is a new airport under construction located in the Bugesera District, about 40 kilometers southeast of Kigali. The facility will serve as a modern air travel center designed to connect Rwanda with international destinations.
The airport project began in 2017 to strengthen Rwanda's position as a regional air hub in East Africa. The development grew from partnerships between the Rwandan government and international stakeholders interested in expanding regional connectivity.
The development of this airport represents Rwanda's vision for establishing itself as a central transportation node connecting East Africa with international destinations.
The site sits on a highland plateau at about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) elevation. Visitors should note the location southeast of the city and plan accordingly for travel time to reach the construction area.
Qatar Airways holds a 60 percent stake in the project, which will receive dedicated power supply from the Rusumo Hydroelectric Power Station.
