Rusumo International Bridge, International bridge at Rwanda-Tanzania border
Rusumo International Bridge is a modern structure crossing the Kagera River at the Rwanda-Tanzania border. It features two traffic lanes that allow larger trucks to cross the frontier, supporting regional trade and commerce.
The original bridge was built in 1972 as a single-lane structure. A new modern replacement was completed in 2014 to handle increasing traffic between the two countries.
The bridge links two nations across a river that has long served as a natural boundary for the region. It now enables daily exchange between Rwanda and Tanzania, shaping the lives of people who regularly cross between both sides.
The bridge is well-marked and easily accessible from both sides. Visitors should bring valid identity documents and expect border control queues, especially during peak hours.
Japanese development aid funded the construction of this modern bridge, making it a symbol of international cooperation. The project was carried out in partnership with local authorities to create better connections between communities.
