Cratère Caubet

Cratère Caubet is a volcanic crater located in the Enclos Fouqué depression at about 2,343 meters elevation. It sits within a broad lava field surrounded by other small craters and black rock formations left from past eruptions.

The crater formed during a phase of volcanic activity that contributed to the creation of the entire Enclos Fouqué complex. This activity shaped the landscape that visitors encounter today.

The crater is part of a protected area that draws visitors interested in the island's volcanic landscapes. The black lava fields and sparse vegetation create a distinctive character that shapes how people experience this remote location.

The site is reachable on foot via a hiking trail of about 8 to 9 kilometers starting from the Piton Partage area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the black lava becomes hot in the sun and shade is scarce.

Despite its modest height of only about 2 meters above the surrounding ground, this location attracts hikers on challenging routes. The walk itself becomes more rewarding to many visitors than reaching the actual summit.
