Tangerang, Administrative district in Banten province, Indonesia.
Tangerang is an administrative district in Banten province, northwestern Java, with direct access to the Java Sea. The zone consists of 29 separate districts spread across flat coastal terrain and agricultural hinterland.
The territory split gradually, first when Tangerang city became independent in 1993, then again when South Tangerang city followed in 2008. These reorganizations created the present division into three separate administrative units.
The name refers to a historic principality on Java and remains present in everyday administrative language. Residents use several local languages alongside national Indonesian, reflecting the diverse linguistic landscape of the area.
The Jakarta–Merak motorway crosses the district, linking the capital with industrial zones in Banten. Travelers can use several exits to reach individual districts and access local roads.
The two urban splits altered the geographic footprint considerably, with much of the population and area now lying outside the current district. The remaining territory nevertheless stayed densely populated and continued developing as an economically active part of Greater Jakarta.
