Grogol 1, 12 Mei Reformasi, Student activism memorial in Grogol, Indonesia
Grogol 1, 12 Mei Reformasi is a memorial bus stop in the Grogol district of West Jakarta, marking the site of student protests on May 12, 1998. It combines a functioning Transjakarta stop with informational displays about the events that took place there.
Six students from Trisakti University were killed here on May 12, 1998, during protests against President Suharto's government. Their deaths helped push the political pressure that led to Suharto's resignation just days later.
The stop carries the date of the students' deaths in its name, so every commuter passing through is reminded of what happened here. Each May, people gather at this spot to mark the anniversary and keep the memory of those events alive.
The stop is part of the Transjakarta network, making it easy to reach from many parts of the city without needing a private vehicle. Visiting in the morning gives you a quieter moment to read the displays before the commuter rush picks up.
Although it functions as an ordinary bus stop, the city officially renamed it in 2013 to permanently embed the memory of the events into everyday urban life. This means thousands of commuters read the name every day without necessarily stopping to think about its meaning.
