Ganjuran Church, Catholic pilgrimage church in Bantul, Indonesia
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus merges traditional Javanese architectural elements with European church design across a 600 square meter area. The building shows a blend of local materials and European construction methods visible in its walls, roof, and interior layout.
The Schmutzer family founded the church in 1924 while running their sugar factory nearby. This made it the oldest church in the Bantul administrative region and the first Catholic site of this scale to exist there.
The altar displays angels dressed as wayang orang performers wearing traditional Javanese garments, bringing local performance art into the Catholic service.
Visitors can easily collect spring water from nine faucets at Tirta Perwitasari, where it flows fresh from the mountain source. The water access is free, and the spring flows abundantly throughout the year.
Standing near the main building is a structure styled like a Hindu temple, sharing architectural features with the Prambanan Temple complex. This unusual pairing shows how the site brings together different religious traditions within its grounds.
