Sukamara is a regency in Central Kalimantan located along the coastline with rivers, mangrove forests, and waterways. The administrative area consists of several districts, some of which include islands and marine territories.
The regency was created in 2002 after separating from a larger neighboring administrative area. This administrative change established independent local governance for the coastal region.
Different communities live here and maintain their own traditions and ways of life. You can see this diversity reflected in local celebrations and how people use public spaces.
The town of Padang serves as the main administrative hub where you can find government offices and services. Traveling by water is often the easiest way to explore the area and reach rural villages and river communities.
Several islands belong administratively to Jelai District, extending the territory beyond the mainland into the sea. These islands are reachable only by boat and give the region a maritime character.
