Waduk Sengguruh, reservoir in Indonesia
Waduk Sengguruh is a large reservoir in the Kepanjen district of East Java, located about 24 kilometers south of Malang. The earthen dam stretches 370 meters long and stands 34 meters high, holding back water from the Brantas River and its tributaries.
Construction of the dam began in 1982 and finished in 1988, designed to control water flow from the Brantas River and filter out sediments that would clog downstream reservoirs. The project involved engineers and contractors from Indonesia and Japan working together on this major infrastructure effort.
Visit during daylight hours when the walking paths around the dam and water are easiest to navigate and most enjoyable. Wear comfortable shoes as there are paths along the water's edge, and remember this is a quiet place where most visitors come to walk or fish rather than find amenities.
The reservoir gradually loses storage capacity as sediment from mountain rivers settles on the bottom, reducing its usable water volume from the original capacity to about half today. Maintenance teams work on managing this natural silting problem to keep the dam functioning effectively for future generations.
