Pura Kebo Edan, Hindu temple in Gianyar, Indonesia
Pura Kebo Edan is a temple in Gianyar with roughly 55 stone statues scattered throughout its grounds. The most notable is a 3.5 meter tall figure of Bhairawa Siwa positioned above a human form.
The temple originated in 1284 during the Kediri period when King Kertanegara appointed Kebo Parud as regent to strengthen Hindu beliefs in Bali. This appointment proved crucial in establishing the religious foundations that shaped the island's spiritual life.
The name means 'Mad Buffalo Temple' and references two statues depicting Nandini, the sacred mount of Siwa. Locals and visitors experience this connection through the visual presence of these figures throughout the grounds.
The temple is located in Dusun Intaran within Pejeng village and requires visitors to wear traditional sarongs and follow a designated path along the side wall. You should arrive prepared with proper attire and be ready to observe the temple's access rules.
The central statue shows Bhairawa dancing while standing on a human form, symbolizing the transcendence of earthly desires through spiritual practice. This artistic representation is a rare example of how transcendence is expressed in Balinese sculptural tradition.
