Puri Lukisan Museum, Art museum in Ubud, Indonesia
Puri Lukisan Museum is an art museum in Ubud, Bali, displaying Balinese paintings and wooden carvings across several gallery buildings set within a garden. The buildings are connected by walking paths and surrounded by ponds and planted areas.
The museum was founded in 1953 by Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet and the prince of Ubud to keep Balinese artworks from being sold abroad. Over time, it became a place that documents how local art changed across several decades.
The paintings inside come from several schools of Balinese art, including the Ubud school, known for detailed scenes of daily life and mythology. Walking through the galleries, you can see how local artists interpreted the same themes in very different ways.
The museum sits in the center of Ubud and is easy to reach on foot from most nearby accommodations. Since the collection is split across several buildings, comfortable shoes and a bit of extra time are worth planning for.
Rudolf Bonnet was himself an artist who lived on Bali for many years, and some of the works in the museum were made by people he knew personally. A few of those pieces are said to show scenes he directly influenced or suggested.
