Strangways crater

The circular geological formation spans 16 kilometers in diameter and contains distinctive features including shatter cones and shocked quartz formations.

Scientific studies in 1971 revealed evidence that disproved initial volcanic origin theories and confirmed the structure as an impact crater from 646 million years ago.

The crater takes its name from the Strangways River, while the surrounding lands maintain connections to Indigenous Australian communities.

Visitors need to arrange transportation through remote terrain and prepare for limited facilities, as the site lies 65 kilometers east-south-east of Mataranka.

The current visible crater represents only a portion of the original impact structure, which scientists estimate measured between 24 and 40 kilometers in diameter.
