Parliament House

Parliament House, Capitol building in Darwin, Australia

Description

Parliament House is a modern legislative building at State Square in Darwin featuring light-diffusing facades and marble floors decorated with territorial symbols. The building houses the Northern Territory Library, public galleries with approximately 200 seats, and offers wheelchair access on all floors.

History

The building opened in 1994 when the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly relocated here from temporary locations. The assembly had operated from various provisional venues across Darwin since 1948.

Culture

A mosaic by Michael Nelson Jagamarra titled Possum and Wallaby Dreaming adorns the forecourt, reflecting Aboriginal connections to the land. The artwork tells stories of the original inhabitants and their spiritual ties to the region through traditional imagery.

Practical

The venue is easily accessible, located centrally at State Square where you can visit the galleries during operating hours. Allow sufficient time to explore both the outdoor artworks and interior spaces at a leisurely pace.

Did you know?

A Desert Rose mosaic with seven granite petals in the foyer represents the six Australian states plus the territory's anticipated statehood at the time of completion. This symbolic design reflects the region's political aspirations when the building opened.
