Emery Point Light

Emery Point Light, lighthouse in Australia

Emery Point Light is a lighthouse on the coast of Australia's Northern Territory near Port Darwin. The tower has a square metal frame painted white, stands about 31 feet (9 meters) tall, and features a lantern positioned about 60 feet (18 meters) above sea level.

A light was first established here in 1900 using a gas lamp, and a new, stronger tower replaced it in 1915. During Cyclone Tracy in 1974, it was the only navigation light that continued operating during the severe storm, helping ships navigate safely.

Emery Point Light takes its name from Lieutenant Emery, who discovered fresh water at the base of a nearby cliff. The structure stands on the grounds of Larrakeyah Barracks and shapes the visual identity of Darwin's port as a visible symbol of the area's maritime history.

The lighthouse stands on military base grounds and is not open to the public. You can view the structure from the nearby coastline and enjoy views of the sea from a distance without being able to approach it directly.

The light uses a 1000-watt tungsten-halogen lamp system and can be seen from about 35 kilometers away. It displays white and red colors depending on the viewing angle to help ships determine their location.
