Government House, Darwin

Government House, Darwin is the official residence of the territory's governor, designed in Gothic Revival style and situated on a hillside in the city center. The property features extensive verandahs and porches with landscaped gardens surrounding the main building.

Construction of the first European stone building in the Northern Territory began in 1870 and opened in 1871 to serve as the residence for territorial governors and administrators. From its start, it functioned as the seat of government power in the newly established region.

The building displays architectural features from different periods and reflects how the style of structures in the Northern Territory evolved from early European settlement to the present day.

The site is accessible for people using walking aids and mobility devices, with handholds installed on the steps for support. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are on a slope and require walking to explore.

Around 1000 protesters gathered on the property in 1918 to demonstrate against the administrator, an event later known as the Darwin Rebellion. This remains one of the most dramatic moments in the region's early administrative history.
