Hampstead Barracks, Military training facility in Greenacres, Australia.
Hampstead Barracks is a military facility in the suburb of Greenacres, north of Adelaide, Australia, used by the Adelaide Universities Regiment. It sits at the corner of Hampstead Road and Muller Road and serves the regiment as a training and administrative base.
The site grew into an important base for reserve units in South Australia over the years. The Land Warfare Centre South Australia once operated here before moving to RAAF Edinburgh.
The Tom Derrick VC Soldiers' Club inside the barracks takes its name from a South Australian soldier who received the Victoria Cross during World War II. His name appears in everyday use at the site and keeps a connection to local military service alive.
The barracks are not open to the general public and entry requires prior authorization. Anyone with a valid reason to visit should contact the relevant military authorities well in advance.
The commanding officer of the Adelaide Universities Regiment also serves as the garrison commander of the entire facility at the same time. This means one person holds two separate command roles, which is an unusual arrangement for a military site in the region.
