No 2 Goods Shed, Heritage railway freight building in Docklands, Melbourne, Australia
No 2 Goods Shed is a massive railway freight warehouse in Docklands with three parallel gabled roofs supported by cast iron columns and featuring doorways along its length. The structure now contains office spaces following extensive restoration and redevelopment work.
The structure was built in 1889 as a freight terminal for the Victorian Railway, serving as Melbourne's main distribution center. The site played an important role in the city's growth during the early industrial period.
The site reflects the scale and methods of Victorian-era railway operations, with its industrial brick construction and administrative tower showing how freight handling was organized in this period. Visitors can sense how central this building was to Melbourne's economic activity through its imposing layout.
The building is located at Bourke Street in Docklands and is easily accessible on foot from other local attractions in this harbor area. The surrounding neighborhood offers plenty of walking paths and viewpoints to explore the structure from different angles.
When completed, this structure was Australia's longest single building, featuring slate roofs with ridge lanterns that provided light and ventilation to the interior. This innovative roofing design was remarkable for its time.
