Seafarers Bridge, Pedestrian bridge in Melbourne, Australia.
Seafarers Bridge is a pedestrian crossing over the Yarra River that links the Docklands with South Wharf. Its steel structure features distinctive elliptical arches that shape the overall form of the crossing.
British architect Nicholas Grimshaw designed this crossing, which opened in 2009 as part of Melbourne's infrastructure expansion. The project aimed to improve the connection between the city's north and south banks.
The bridge takes its name from the Mission to Seafarers center on the northern bank, honoring the maritime past that shaped this waterfront area. Walking across, you sense the connection to the river's working history through the locality's character.
The span of around 75 meters serves both pedestrians and cyclists, offering direct access to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Multiple entry points mean you can reach it from different directions.
The structure displays an asymmetrical arrangement of arches, with three on the north side and four larger ones on the south. This uneven distribution creates a gradual rise in elevation toward Plenary Hall.
