Moorooduc Quarry Flora and Fauna Reserve, Nature reserve in Mount Eliza, Victoria, Australia.
Moorooduc Quarry Flora and Fauna Reserve is a nature reserve created on the site of a former quarry with walking trails and lookout points. A lake formed within the old excavation sits at the heart of the land and is surrounded by native plant and animal species.
The site began as a quarry in 1887, with a railway spur built in 1888 to transport stone for railway expansion. After extraction ended, the land was converted into a protected area for native nature.
The local community uses the site for nature observation and environmental stewardship activities. Volunteers work regularly to maintain habitats and monitor the native plants and animals found here.
The reserve can be reached through multiple entry points located along main roads that provide access to walking trails. Visiting works best on foot, as paths wind through different areas of the land and around the lake.
The rock formations exposed in the quarry walls date back hundreds of millions of years to the Ordovician period. These ancient stone layers give visitors a direct view into the geological history of the continent.
