Lysterfield Park, Protected area in Victoria, Australia
Lysterfield Park is a protected area covering 1,398 hectares southeast of Melbourne, with forests, lakes, and networks of walking paths throughout. The landscape includes rolling hills, open grasslands, and Lysterfield Lake, which is ringed by picnic areas and parking facilities.
The area opened to the public in 1979 after an earlier dam project was abandoned. Since then it has grown into a popular recreation destination welcoming visitors year-round.
This land belongs to the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples, whose connection to the area remains strong today. You can sense their presence through place names and how the landscape is cared for.
The park is easy to reach and has parking at several entry points with clear signage. Bring proper shoes and be prepared for changing weather, especially if you plan to explore the longer trails or visit the lake.
The park hosted mountain biking competitions during the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which led to the development of one of Australia's most active trail networks. This sporting heritage has made it a gathering place for riders of all levels.
