Melbourne Central, railway station in Melbourne CBD, Victoria, Australia
Melbourne Central is an underground station in central Melbourne with four platforms serving multiple train lines. Located about 95 feet (29 metres) below street level, it features a large concourse with shops, a food court, and numerous staircases, escalators, and lifts connecting the street level, the shopping centre above, and the train platforms.
The station opened in 1981 as part of Melbourne's first underground rail network. Originally named Museum because of the museum building nearby, it was renamed Melbourne Central in the early 1990s after the museum relocated and the shopping centre was constructed above.
The station takes its name from the Melbourne Central shopping centre built above it in the late 1980s. This mixing of transport and retail creates a social meeting point where people gather not only to catch trains but also to shop and eat.
The station is fully accessible with lifts, escalators, and accessible toilets available for visitors. Helpful staff are on hand to answer questions and provide directions, while real-time information boards display train departures and arrivals clearly.
The platform level features striking red tiles that give the station a bright appearance, while the upper concourse uses off-white tiles for a clean, light feel. This deliberate colour contrast was designed to make the underground space inviting and visually easy to navigate.
