Yarra Ranges Shire

Yarra Ranges Shire is an administrative division in Victoria covering mountains, valleys, forests, and rivers across the eastern part of the state. The local government center operates from Lilydale and oversees nine distinct wards throughout the territory.

The shire formed in 1994 when four former councils merged to create a single administrative body. This consolidation brought together Sherbrooke, Lillydale, Healesville, and Upper Yarra into one unified division.

The Wurundjeri people have deep ties to these lands, marked by cultural sites and learning programs throughout the region. Visitors encounter reminders of their presence in the place names and protected areas.

Most of the territory remains undeveloped with natural forests, mountains, and rivers that provide plenty to explore. The area has good walking trails and multiple entry points for visitors interested in the outdoors.

Nearly all of the land here remains non-urban, preserving natural ecosystems that support diverse plants and animals. This conservation makes the shire a significant refuge for the region's wildlife.
