Oberon Dam

Oberon Dam, Embankment dam in New South Wales, Australia.

Oberon Dam is a concrete slab and buttress structure that spans 378 meters across the Fish River. The construction features a concrete ski jump spillway and fuse plug system for managing water flow.

Construction between 1943 and 1947 addressed water supply problems in Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland, and Oberon. The wall was later heightened in 1959 to increase storage capacity.

The reservoir draws anglers throughout the year, thanks to regular stocking programs that maintain populations of brown trout, rainbow trout, and redfin. Visitors can observe the fish populations and fish from the banks.

The site sits in a region with temperate conditions, though water levels vary seasonally. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and take care on any slippery surfaces near the water.

It is one of only seven concrete slab and buttress dams in Australia and holds the highest wall and largest storage capacity among them. These qualities make the structure a notable example of water engineering in the country.
