Auburn City Council, Former local government area in Greater Western Sydney, Australia
Auburn City Council was a local government area west of Sydney covering multiple suburbs and communities. It was home to the modern Civic Centre completed in 2000 and served an area of significant cultural diversity.
The council was founded in 1892 and merged with Lidcombe municipality in 1949 to form a larger administrative body. After more than a century of operation, it consolidated with other councils to become Cumberland Council in 2016.
The area was home to the Gallipoli Mosque and Auburn Botanic Gardens, where visitors could find Japanese gardens, formal plantings, and native Australian species. These places reflected the diverse communities that shaped the region.
The Civic Centre was located in the heart of the administrative zone and served as the main point for public services. The area is now part of a larger council, so the original government structure no longer operates as a separate entity.
The first council meetings in 1892 occurred at Lee's Temperance Hotel before the original town hall was built in 1898. This modest beginning shaped how local government took root in the region.
