Silverwater, Administrative district in City of Parramatta Council, Australia
Silverwater is an administrative district in the City of Parramatta Council spanning about 3 square kilometers along the southern bank of the Parramatta River. The area combines industrial zones, residential neighborhoods, and institutional facilities.
The area originated from a land grant in 1807 to John Blaxland for 1290 acres, originally named Newington Estate, which started agricultural activities including salt production and cattle breeding. These early economic activities shaped the region's development.
The Wangal people of the Eora-Tharawal culture were the original inhabitants of this land, living alongside the Barramattigal clan of the Dharug people. Their connection to this place remains part of the area's identity.
The M4 Western Motorway provides direct access to Silverwater Road with multiple bus routes connecting the area to Parramatta, Strathfield, and Sydney Olympic Park. Getting around is straightforward with various transport options available.
The first five-span prestressed concrete box girder bridge in New South Wales opened here in 1962, spanning the Parramatta River. This engineering feat was groundbreaking for bridge construction in the region at that time.
