Sydney, Electoral division in New South Wales, Australia
The Division of Sydney is a federal electoral district in New South Wales covering the city center and inner neighborhoods. The area stretches from Spectacle Island to Sydney Heads and also includes the distant Lord Howe Island.
The electoral division was created in 1968 by merging three earlier districts into a single constituency. Its first election took place in 1969, bringing together the territories of Dalley, East Sydney, and West Sydney.
The area is home to communities of people from many different countries and backgrounds. Walking through the neighborhoods, you encounter a wide range of languages, shops, and traditions that coexist side by side.
Residents hold federal elections every three years to select their representative for the Australian House of Representatives. During these electoral periods, people throughout the district participate in voting and shape their political representation.
The area showed distinctive household patterns in a past census that set it apart from other parts of Australia. This characteristic made the division notable for its population composition at that time.
