Railway Square road overbridge, Heritage railway bridge in Sydney, Australia
The railway overbridge carries George Street across the former goods railway line to Darling Harbour in Sydney's city center. It was later rebuilt and now includes a pedestrian pathway running beneath its structure.
The bridge was built in 1855 under engineer William Randle for the Sydney Railway Company and marks the beginning of colonial railway infrastructure. Its original sections remain among the oldest surviving railway structures in New South Wales.
The structure shows how sandstone, brick, and concrete were combined over time, telling a story of Australian railway architecture. When you walk past it, the different materials visible in its walls reveal the building changes across different eras.
The overbridge is easy to reach from George Street in the business district and is clearly visible from multiple angles. Footpaths in the area allow for close inspection and walking underneath the structure.
Some sections still have sandstone blocks from the original 1800s construction with chisel marks visible from hand work. These details are easy to miss but show the craftsmanship of the era.
