Elouera Beach, Coastal beach in Cronulla, Australia
Elouera Beach is a sandy beach on Bate Bay in Cronulla, a coastal suburb in the south of Sydney, New South Wales. It sits between Cronulla Beach to the north and South Cronulla Beach to the south, receiving open ocean swells that make it popular with swimmers and surfers.
A surf lifesaving club was established at this beach in the 1960s, turning it into an organized center for water safety and swimming. That foundation shaped the way the beach has been used and managed ever since.
The name Elouera comes from an Aboriginal language and is said to mean something like a pleasant place, which gives the beach a layer of meaning beyond what you see at first glance. Locals and visitors alike use the beach for swimming, walking along the sand, and watching surfers read the waves from the shore.
Lifeguards patrol the beach during the main swimming season, and swimming between the flags is the safest way to enjoy the water. The beach is easy to reach from the Cronulla train station, which is a short walk away.
A short section of shoreline between Elouera and the beach to its north is known locally as The Wall, a name most visitors never hear. This curve in the coast changes how the water moves, creating different wave conditions on either side of it.
