Tom Uglys Bridge, Steel and concrete bridge in southern Sydney, Australia
Tom Uglys Bridge is a steel and concrete structure spanning 499 meters across the Georges River, connecting Blakehurst on the St George side with Sylvania in the Sutherland Shire. The dual system includes roadways and separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
The original bridge replaced a ferry service in 1929 and was Australia's longest at that time, operating with tolls. A second bridge was built alongside it in 1987 to provide extra traffic capacity.
The river took its name from European settlers, but the Dharawal and Dharug peoples called the waterway Tucoerah long before that. Locals and visitors experience the river landscape as a place for recreation and daily life.
You can walk or cycle across using marked pathways that run separate from vehicle traffic. Early morning or early evening is the most comfortable time to cross on foot or by bicycle.
The two bridges do not run parallel to each other but gradually fan apart, starting just 5 meters apart at the north end and reaching 62 meters apart at the south end. This unusual angle reflects how they accommodate different approaches on each shore.
