George Street, Pedestrian street in the central business district, Sydney, Australia

George Street runs about 3 km north–south through central Sydney, from The Rocks near the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Railway Square beside Central Station, where it becomes Broadway. Since 2019–2022 most of it between Bridge Street and Rawson Place has been a pedestrian mall with light rail tracks down the centre, paved in light grey stone tiles.

The street originated in Sydney's early colonial period and was named after King George III. It developed into the city's economic spine and continues to shape the layout of central Sydney today.

The street is easily walkable and offers direct access to public transport, especially near Circular Quay. Be prepared for high foot traffic during daytime hours and consider visiting during quieter periods for a more leisurely stroll.

On 8 August 1907, a meeting at Bateman's Crystal Hotel on George Street resolved to form the New South Wales Rugby Football League, Australia's first professional rugby football association and predecessor of today's National Rugby League. From 1937, Frank Jenner made a daily commitment to speak about Christianity to ten different people on the street.
