Boggo Road Gaol, Historic prison in Dutton Park, Queensland, Australia.
Boggo Road Gaol is a former correctional facility in Dutton Park, Queensland, Australia. The structure of No. 2 Division shows thick limestone walls, high ceilings, and cells built to late 19th-century standards.
The facility opened in July 1883 and served as Queensland's main prison until it closed in 1992. During its operation, 42 executions took place here before capital punishment was abolished in Queensland.
The name comes from the former Boggo Road that ran alongside the compound, now part of Dutton Park. Visitors today see original cells and can understand how inmates were housed and spent their days here.
The grounds lie close to Brisbane's center and offer guided walks through the remaining buildings. Tours are led by staff who explain daily prison routines and share what life was like for inmates.
The women's division built in 1903, known as No. 2 Division, is the last intact 19th-century prison structure in Queensland. It retains original fixtures and was later used for male prisoners as well.
