Mowbray Park War Memorial

Mowbray Park War Memorial features a mounted Australian Light Horseman statue standing on a tall pedestal with two artillery pieces positioned on either side. The monument sits within a 3.2-hectare park that slopes gently toward the Brisbane River and is dotted with tree-lined paths and open green areas.

The memorial was built in 1917 to honor local soldiers, sailors, and nurses from the East Brisbane training area who served during World War I. Its dedication marked the beginning of its role as a lasting tribute to those from the region who participated in the war.

Today the memorial serves as a gathering place where the community comes together for remembrance events and quiet reflection. Visitors often pause here to honor those who served.

The memorial stands on Lytton Road and is easily accessible on foot from the main street with clear signage. The surrounding park offers plenty of space to walk around and spend time in comfort, especially during daylight hours.

The two cannons on display are original World War I artillery pieces that were presented at the dedication ceremony in 1917 by Lady Elsie Goold-Adams. These authentic weapons create a direct link between visitors and the actual events being commemorated.
