Built between 1935 and 1950, St Nicholas Cathedral became the first purpose-built Russian Orthodox church in Australia, receiving consecration on October 4, 1936.
The cathedral maintains Russian Orthodox traditions through regular services in Church Slavonic, with additional English services conducted every two months.
The cathedral contains essential liturgical elements for Orthodox worship, including wooden floors, timber rafters, and a library of Russian literature.
Between 1948 and 1950, the cathedral served as the primary seat for the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Australia under Bishop Theodore Rafalsky.
