Woolloongabba Police Station, Heritage listed building in Queensland, Australia
Woolloongabba Police Station is a two-story brick building with a basement and a tall gabled roof with a ventilator, built in 1913. A three-story service annex was added in 1937, along with a garage for police vehicles.
The first station was a rented house on Ipswich Road starting in 1888, but soon became too small. The new building opened in 1913 and became the South Coast District headquarters in 1934, followed by major expansions in 1937.
The building stands on busy Main Street and is a visual landmark in the area. The way it fits into the historic streetscape shows how important police stations were to the community.
The building sits on a busy shopping street and is easy to reach on foot. Its central location near main roads makes it a straightforward place to visit.
During the Great Depression, a separate relief office operated in the basement where officers helped unemployed people with rations. These rooms had their own entrance from Main Street, showing how police stations went beyond law enforcement to support communities.
