Bulimba, Residential suburb on Brisbane River, Australia
Bulimba is a residential suburb along the southern bank of Brisbane River, situated about 4 kilometers northeast of the city center. It features extensive waterfront walking and cycling paths that run along the river's edge.
The area was originally home to the Yugarapul people before becoming farmland in the 1820s. It later transformed into a major shipbuilding center for the region.
Oxford Street forms the main gathering place, lined with independent bookstores, cinemas, art galleries, and restaurants serving food from around the world. This street is where locals spend their time shopping, eating, and discovering art.
The suburb is well connected by public transport, with ferry services from wharves on Oxford Street and Apollo Road, plus regular bus routes throughout the area. The waterfront paths are open to everyone and easy to walk at your own pace.
The Norman R Wright & Sons shipyard still operates on the waterfront, keeping alive the area's shipbuilding heritage since the 1930s. This working yard is a rare reminder of an industry that once thrived here.
